“Look what the cat dragged in. You look like shit.”

I chuckled at Gage and said, “Since we look very similar, I would assume that you’re talking about yourself too?”

“I won’t lie and say that I haven’t seen better days.”

After his exit from our parents’ two days ago, I’d finally tracked down my elusive twin and convinced him to come to Elevate for a quick drink or two. I’d been a little delayed in getting there so of course he ragged on me, which was what I had expected him to do.

He immediately handed me my favorite beer, somehow knowing that I wasn’t in a hard liquor mood tonight. This didn’t surprise me since we often were in tune with one another and could pick up on the other’s feelings whether we liked it or not.

Except this time, I didn’t know what was going on with Gage and I was determined to find out why.

“So do you want to skip the bullshit and get right down to the reason you asked me to come here?”

“If that’s what you want to do.” I took a long drink from my beer, using that time to think of how best to proceed from here. Gage was already on edge, and I didn’t want to further put him out of sorts because I was trying to gather information from him. “What’s up with all of the absences and leaving suddenly when it comes to family events? Everyone is worried about you.”

Gage gave a small sad smile and shook his head before he replied, “It’s a long story.”

“I have time.” Especially if it meant sorting this out.

“There’s a lot I can’t discuss, but I’m working on a couple of deals that require a lot of my time.”

I believed him. I could tell he was being purposefully vague, but I believed him. He knew better than to lie to me because I would be able to tell in a heartbeat. “Is it something Dad put on your plate?”

I questioned who else would give him something to do that required him to look this tired or to miss this much time with family and that was the only person I could think of. Then again, Dad said he didn’t know what was going on at the family dinner and he would have no reason to lie.

"Dad’s not involved, no. He recently asked me about it as well.”

So, Dad had followed up. Good. “How much can you tell me?”

Gage shrugged. “I’ve basically told you what I can right now, but when something more concrete comes about, I’ll make an announcement.”

It reminded me of the deal that I’d made that almost fell right off the edge if I hadn’t threatened Malcolm. I too had been purposefully vague about the terms of the agreement, but it hadn’t required me working longer hours than normal in order to get it done. What the hell was Gage working on that could be this big?

“Are you in any kind of trouble? You know if you are we—”

“It’s nothing like that.
